Today I am thrilled to share the recent chat I had with my friend and fellow author, Tracey Holland whose debut novel, Faith's Folly, was published recently by SpellBound Books. It is exciting to publish your debut novel and equally exciting to share that journey and learn all about the experience direct from the author. Thank you for your time, today, Tracey.
You know, being an author is like having this amazing power to breathe life into the characters and worlds swirling around in my head. It's such a thrill to piece together stories that not only entertain but also strike a chord with readers. Pouring thoughts, fears, and dreams into words and watching them come alive on the page is incredible. I love diving into complex topics and sparking conversations through my narratives. And let's not forget the buzz I get from connecting with people who read my work. Hearing how they see things or what they took away from the story—I wouldn't trade that for anything. Really, writing lets me tap into the literary world in such a unique way, and hopefully, leave a mark with each word I write.
Do you have a specific routine for writing? Is there a special place or particular tool you use?
For me, I need somewhere relatively quiet, but it doesn't have to be the same place every time. It's all about being comfy. Oh, and I've got this slight obsession with stationery—I can't get enough pens! You don't even want to know how many journals I've collected, trust me, it's almost criminal. As for tools, my thesaurus is my best friend. I love finding new words for describing sensations. Words just have a way of thrilling me, I can't get enough of them!
What do you like to do when you’re not planning or writing your next book?
When I'm not busy planning or writing my next book, I love to spend time outdoors. There's something so refreshing about being in nature, and it often provides me with great inspiration for my writing. I'm also a big fan of watching documentaries, especially ones that focus on forensics and crime. Staying immersed in that world really helps keep me in the right mindset for crafting my crime novels. It's just the perfect way to relax and stay connected to my work, even when I'm taking a break from it.
Do you have another story planned or in progress? When can we expect to see that?
I'm currently wrapping up my second book called "Count Your Sins." It's taking a bit of a darker turn than the first as we dive deeper into the characters' lives while introducing some fresh elements. I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD this year, and these experiences have inspired me to explore these themes in my story.
While it still has its light moments of humour, they're a bit more subdued this time around. The setting moves into the literary world, giving readers a peek into the dynamics between authors. And yes, Churchill, that mischievous goat, is making a comeback! We'll also spend more time with Faith's sister, Hope.
The book’s set to launch in 2025, and I'm excited to share it with everyone. Keep your eyes peeled!
What advice do you have for other writers?
So, you want some tips from one writer to another? Well, let me tell you, this past year has been a rollercoaster with the release of my first book, "Faith's Folly." It was quite the eye-opener, especially when it came to getting to grips with the industry and promoting my work. If there's one piece of advice I could share, it's this: surround yourself with fellow authors who aren't afraid to tell it like it is. Honest feedback is invaluable. And while you're at it, extend a helping hand to other writers too. We all need a little support and encouragement along the way. Trust me, it makes the journey a whole lot smoother and a lot more fun!
